The Central Government has proposed to bring Chandigarh under Article 240 of the Constitution. For this purpose, a Bill was introduced in Parliament. However, due to strong opposition and protests by political parties, the proposal has currently been kept on hold.

For examination purposes, ignore the political developments and debates. What matters is the constitutional provision involved.

Article 240 — Power of President to make regulations for certain Union territories
(1) The President may make regulations for the peace, progress and good government of the Union territory of—
(a) the Andaman and Nicobar Islands;
(b) Lakshadweep;
(c) Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu;
(d) Puducherry: — (when its Legislative Assembly is dissolved or suspended.)
